I cancelled my registration and DMV said to contact the Assessor’s Office. Why?

Cancelling your registration is one of the requirements to receive an adjustment. You must also no longer own the vehicle. The cancelled plate receipt only acknowledges that the vehicle is no longer registered. If you do not own the vehicle, see “I Don’t Own My Motor Vehicle” FAQ.

Unregistered motor vehicles are still taxable and need to be declared with the Town on a Personal Property Declaration. Please contact us if this applies to you. Penalties do apply for failure to file.
