Cromwell Senior Center Celebrates 25 Years!
As the Senior Center Director for the Town of Cromwell, I wanted to take the opportunity to officially announce that the Cromwell Senior Center, is now celebrating 25 years in existence. We serve as a resource for the entire community. We see and service not only elderly residents themselves, but caregivers, children, friends and/or neighbors of elderly residents, all of whom benefit regularly from the information, programs, services, and referrals offered by our center staff on a daily basis. Our municipal senior center has been housed in a wing of the ground floor of the town hall complex since 1985. I, myself, have been the Director at the center since 1988 and therefore have seen over the years how our senior center has evolved into a one-stop location for all senior services.
Today’s senior centers will need to continue to ‘evolve’ as they strive to meet the needs of multiple generations of senior citizens who are more active and diverse. Senior Centers today provide many more services than just offering recreational drop-in programs such as bingo and cards. We also offer an array of diversified programs and services needed to meet the needs of our senior population from the young baby boomers to the older seniors (85+). These diverse programs/services range from issues involving financial: (winter energy assistance, rental rebate, Medicare Part D Enrollment Counseling, food pantry), Transportation Services (fixed route & dial-a-ride), Specialty fitness Classes (Yoga Tai Chi, Pilates) Educational/Cultural courses (Computer Classes, Cooking, Arts/Craft, 55 Alive Defensive Driving), and on and on… In addition, we act as a referral source to help seniors connect with the various outside state and private organizations. We collaborate daily with other agencies working together as a team to provide needed programs. Some of these collaborate efforts include our congregate/home-bound meals program with the Community Renewal Team, our Blood Pressure Screenings with Cromwell Health Care, weekly Health Clinic and Annual Flu Shot Clinic with MasoniCare, etc.
Therefore, in celebration of 25 years in existence, I urged you when you have a moment to visit us on the web @ www.cromwellct.com - go to town departments, then “Senior Center”. You will find a wealth of information and resources available to you, regardless of your own individual age. For more information on any of our programs or services, please feel free to contact us at (860) 632-3447; or stop into our center for a visit us at: 41 West Street, Cromwell – (We are open M-F from 8:30am-4:00pm)
Sincerely,
Theresa F. Strong, Senior Services Director, Town of Cromwell
